Yes; however, our mission is to empower people and we encourage the use of public transportation, including MetroAccess, Call‐A‐Bus, Metrobus and Metrorail, as the primary means of transportation for the people we serve through Day and Employment services. In Residential Supports, every Ardmore home has its own van.
Ardmore receives funding through the Maryland State Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), private foundation grants, county grants, donations and contributions, and private pay.

Referrals generally come through a service coordination provider, like Resource Connections, or through a Transition Coordinator out of the school system. Families and individuals may also self-refer. All DDA referrals are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Director of the respective service department and the Chief Executive Officer.
We approach our DDA intake process in a very personal and individual-specific manner. Typically, for those persons receiving DDA supports, the appropriate department head and possibly the CEO will meet with the individual and his or her family one or more times to determine whether or not there is an appropriate fit already existing within the program (i.e. an opening in a residential home), or whether new services (an expansion) need to be designed specifically around the individual.
Staff participate in both global trainings and individual-specific training to ensure their competency in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities. Applicants are generally given a first and second interview prior to a job offer. Staff must have a valid drivers license and a good driving record. Prior to being offered a position with Ardmore, potential staff must pass a background check and a drug test. Upon hire, new employees must, as part of Orientation, pass a reading and math skills test. New Hire Probationary periods extend for 90 days. In that 90 days, if a new hire does not meet expectations, including attending and passing additional training and working successfully with other staff as well as the people we support, they will be dismissed.
There is no waiting list per se, but availability in our programs may be limited.
The most important factor, regardless of which service you are applying for, is that there is a good ‘fit’ between the individual applying, Ardmore’s capacity, and the other individuals with whom the applicant may be matched.
The term Intellectual and Developmental Disability (I/DD) means a severe, chronic disability that is attributed to a mental and/or physical impairment and has an onset prior to age 22.
Ardmore was started in 1963 by a group of parents who wanted to ensure educational and other opportunities for their children who had intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Today, Ardmore supports over 245 adults and transition-age students and employs over 175 staff. Our mission is to empower people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to lead lives of their choosing.
Ardmore offers Customized Employment, Job Development, Day Supports, Community Learning Services (CLS), Employment Development Service (EDS) and Organizational Employment Services (OES), Residential Supports, and In-home supports (CSLA). Services are currently provided in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. We will consider other locations on a case-by-case basis.
